Todd Gray

"I did not find my artistic style, it found me.  It more or less punched me in the face."

- Todd Gray

In a career that has spanned almost four decades, Todd Gray has created a unique and original visual language that is instantly recognizable throughout the world.

Todd Gray was born in the same year that pop art (as fine art) came into the spotlight of the world and these images have had profound effects on his life and the evolution of his art. The clean lines, bright colors and powerful energy were very strong influences for Gray. He always loved the simplicity in which pop art communicates large ideas through the simplest of means. Todd’s canvas typically consists of simple geometric cubes… very similar to the blocks we grew up playing as a child.

Gray and his team knew that his mural at the location of the 9/11 attack resonated emotionally with virtually everyone while he created it and will do so again as the world marks twenty years since the tragic event. The iconic 100 foot wide ‘Flabbergast’ mural incorporates much of Gray’s visual language; consisting of clean, hard edge design elements, vibrant opaque colors and fun images that mark his earlier works. Painted on a huge, corrugated metal façade, it is essentially a three-dimensional sculpture “flattened” for a two-dimensional design, giving it remarkable power. Gray’s mural is easily accessed by visitors to Manhattan’s Oculus and 9/11 Memorial Plaza.

“Works of art can lift spirits, but whit this mural we saw that public art can bring hope and healing to a very sad place. Thousands of people watched us paint every day for a month and many told us that our work made them smile. Some even jumped for joy.”

The iconic 100’ wide mural, located at the World Trade Center in New York, marks the 20th anniversary of 9/11. The mural was hand painted by Todd Gray and his team (completed 2018, refreshed 2021). ‘Flabbergast’ is the only World Trade Center mural not created by a street artist.
